The Return of Joey Bada$$

No rapper has brought nineties boom bap rap back to the mainstream like Joey Bada$$. Granted J. Cole has had some pure east coast cuts on his last 2 projects but those projects have mixed other styles too. Anyway back to Joey, the 22 year old rapper is ready to drop his sophomore studio album titled “Amerikkkan Badass” on the 7th of April 2017, just slightly over 3 weeks from now. He made the announcement via his Twitter account yesterday (13th March 2017).

From the looks of it this will be a politically-charged album. He dropped the political single “Land of the Free” a few days ago and the album title which has 3 Ks hints at a racial undertone to the project. Some of the songs titles also hint at the same message with titles like “Babylon” and “Amerikkkan Idol”. The 12 track album has a few notable features including Styles P, Schoolboy Q and J. Cole so there’s a lot to expect from it.

His debut album “B4.Da.$$” was a commercial and critical success and this might possibly top it if the first two songs released from the album are anything to go by. His most commercially successful song to date “Devastated” is also going to appear on the project.

Joey found himself in the line of fire when he brought in the sensitive topic of beloved deceased rapper Tupac Shakur. Joey tweeted that he thinks he’s a better rapper than Pac which triggered the barrage of responses. He clarified the matter by tweeting “When I said I was better than PAC (my favorite rapper of all time) I was referring to rap skill. Bar for bar. Not accolades or influence. And I back myself 1000 times to that fact… media like twisting up the words but that’s I meant when I said it for all you butt hurt bozos.”

One thing that Joey seems to be doing right like few of his peers is not flooding the airwaves with his music. Personally I think this prevents an artist from saturating the market and as a result helps to preserve a certain level of demand from the fans. A Jay-Z project would probably not be as treasured and anticipated if he dropped a new project every 3 months. But that is just my opinion.

The entire tracklist of Joey’s new album is below. I personally look forward to this release.
